Administration Reveals Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Third Week
The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Early Information
The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.
Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.
During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Last week, labor groups sought a court injunction to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.
A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the start of the month.
A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.
This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
